What To Say | Meeting Born Ruffians (!)

Boy oh boy oh boy, where do I begin? To start off plain and simple, I finally met my favourite band, Born Ruffians. They are a Canadian Indie-rock band, originally from Midland, Ontario, but now moved to the motherland of Toronto. It all began in 2010, when I first saw their music video for What To Say, on MTV. I was instantly hooked on that song and immediately Googled them up and the rest is history. I fell in love with their songs; specifically the rhythmic style of their guitar and vocals. They definitely have a unique sound and give off that nonchalant, melancholy yet hyped and party-ish vibe. Bunch of cool dudes basically. And because of them, they've paved the road to great music & introduced Indie music to me. The members consists of Luke Lalonde (lead vocalist, guitarist, songwriter), Mitch Derosier (bass), Andy Llyod (guitar keyboard) & recently added member, Adam Hindle (drums). However, before Adam Hindle, there was Steve Hamelim, whom I've liked just as much as the other members, but unfortunately he quit the band last year.

My undying love and appreciation for them continued to grow. I also introduced the band to some of my friends, whom enjoy their sound as well. I eventually attended my first Born Ruffians concert back in 2012, with three of my friends. The event is blurry to my knowledge, so I forgot what it was called and who else performed, but they were bands I am now familiar with. Point is, I saw Born Ruffians for the first time, Luke walked right past me, I fangirled and I was one happy gal.

The second time I saw them was at the Paper Bag Records 10th Annual event, where Elliott Brood and Friends, Woodhands and The Acorn played alongside Born Ruffians. This time, I was literally standing right in front of the stage, where I can see full size Luke Lalonde; left, right and center. It was beautiful (haha). A friend who accompanied me the first time, accompanied me once again, so it was cool to enjoy it with someone who I had previously enjoyed it with. They played and rocked it, I swooned, I danced and lost my voice. And I was completely fine with that.

The third time I saw them was at The Danforth Music Hall; this time my brother (whom had already began an obsession with them, thanks to me), his friend and my friend (a new one) came along. Unfortunately, this time I wasn't able to enjoy the concert with the people who came since I bought my ticket separate from theirs. They sat on the balcony, whilst I stayed on the ground floor, right in front of them. I didn't want to fret upon it, so I just enjoyed it by myself and fed off the energy of everyone else around me (it was wild). And obviously you know what happened; they played and fucking rocked it, I swooned, I danced and this time, I met Mitch and took a photo with him at the end of the concert. Unfortunately, Luke was busy (that's okay though). At the end of the day, I was one happy girl, once again.

Now this brings me to my fourth time seeing them, which was on September 4th (yesterday). It was a Pepsi Pop Up event, which was clearly sponsored by Pepsi. It was also a free concert, which means fuck yeah. My best friend wasn't able to attend, so I asked another good friend of mine to accompany me, and she was happy to come along! Doors opened at 7, but it was a first come, first serve event, so we left at 1 and got there at 2. We then ate lunch at Salad King and ventured off into Richmond Street, where the giant Pepsi bottle was located (the concert was inside a giant pepsi bottle guys. I know, so awesome). We played some trivia games, got our free Pepsi's and then lined up at 5 to get our tickets. Prior to getting in, the MC attempted to entertain us; key word being attempt. He was an awesome fella though, I can't deny that. Born Ruffians weren't the only band performing however; Hollerado, who is also friends with Born Ruffians, performed before them and they put on a great show. I wasn't too familiar with their songs, until I realized I knew three of them (listening to Indie 88.1 pays off I guess). They rocked and I danced. Born Ruffians then graced the stage with their presence, and I was front row, ONCE AGAIN. I don't know how I do it ;). During one of their breaks on stage, I had stupidly asked Mitch for a high five, because I thought I was cool and shit (also, why not?). He replied by saying "That was the most polite way to ask for a high five" and giggled (and obviously high fived me). They put on a fucking awesome performance and I don't know how they do it, but they just keep getting better and better each time. They also did an encore performance, thanks to this one dude who asked them to (Thank you). It was brilliant. After the concert was finished, they had a "meet and greet", if you will. I was SO ecstatic because I didn't think it was possible for me to meet them. Usually, we all just leave or those who are dedicated, wait out for them (I've tried many a times but failed), or they stay backstage for a while. This time, the event organized a meet and greet and fortunately, there wasn't a lot of people (but the event was at its capacity). I excitingly lined up with my friend, and anticipated finally meeting all of them. I was more so excited to meet Luke, since he is my absolute favourite and I've already met and high fived Mitch (we're basically buddies now). It was my turn to meet them and the first thing I said was "I don't have anything to sign", in which they proceeded to laugh (with good intentions) because clearly they were signing the event paper for everyone. I was happy anyway because it paved a conversation. Then after a few laughs (okay, literally like one), and secretly admiring Luke's beauty (he kept messing with his hair), I asked all of them for high fives. They happily obliged and high fived me and Luke even said "woo!" when it was his turn. Yes, I was internally freaking out but I kept my cool. Also, I am never washing my hand (totally kidding). All in all, I left that giant Pepsi bottle (I swear I'm not sponsored) being the happiest fucking girl. And I fina-fucking-lly met my favourite band (sorry for using so much profanity; excitement does that to ya). Only took 4 years and 4 concerts.
